Are you a “breakfast person”? I most definitely am. Pancakes, waffles, cinnamon rolls…I go to bed at night thinking about what I am going to have for breakfast the next morning (how do I not weigh 800lbs?). Thankfully, both of my kids are “breakfast people” too. Breakfast is the first thing they ask about when they wake up in the morning. Much like their momma, they have a mouth full of sweet teeth, so sweet breakfasts are regularly on the menu. Now that it’s October, it’s time to start making Halloween pancakes breakfasts.
Much to my children’s delight, I went all out this past weekend and served up a bunch of Halloween inspired pancakes. Their favorite was anything with icing!
My Favorite Pancakes
- Banana Blueberry Pancakes: This pancake recipe is one of my all-time favorite pancake recipes. It calls for blueberries and banana, but it tastes just as amazing with chocolate chips or just plain banana.
- Pioneer Woman Perfect Pancakes: When I’m feeling extra homemaker-y (not a word, but go with me) I make these pancakes from The Pioneer Woman. So delicious!
- Krusteaz Buttermilk Pancake Mix: Making pancakes from scratch isn’t always an option. My favorite box pancake mix is from Krusteaz. Just add water…so good!
Pancake Tips
- Preheat the skillet before making your pancakes. The pan is warm enough when a drop of water on the skillet evaporates quickly.
- The heat should be set on medium to medium-low depending on the stove. My gas range cooks pancakes best at medium-low. If the skillet is too hot, the outside will burn while the inside remains raw. Not ideal.
- Don’t over mix. The less stirring of the pancake batter the fluffier the pancakes will be.
- Flip pancakes once the bubbles start to appear and stay in the center of the pancake.
Halloween Pancakes for Kids
The beauty of these Halloween pancakes is that you can use any pancake recipe you want. The design and decoration has nothing to do with the pancake itself. Frozen pancakes? Fine. Pancakes made from scratch? Dandy. As long as you have a means for acquiring a pancake you can make these adorable Halloween pancakes for your kids.
Cobweb Pancakes
These adorably spooky pancakes were so simple to make.
Toss a couple marshmallows into a microwave-safe dish. Heat in the microwave for 15-20 seconds, just until the marshmallows are puffy and gooey. Let them cool slightly.
Once the marshmallows are cool to the touch, use your hands to stretch the gooey marshmallow over the top of the pancakes. Be sure the marshmallow has something to stick to on either side (i.e. the plate or the pancakes). It’s a messy process, but gives an adorable result.
Mummy Pancakes
Mummy pancakes are always a hit!
In this photo I used a powdered sugar glaze, but you could easily use melted white chocolate, white candy melts, or white frosting.
Place glaze/melted chocolate/frosting in a plastic bag. Use scissors to cut a corner of the bag. Use this as a DIY piping bag. Make lines along the pancake to create the mummy look.
I also added black food coloring gel to the pancake batter to make the white icing pop.
Add candy eyeballs for the finishing touch.
Jack Skellington Pancakes
What is Halloween without The Nightmare Before Christmas? No Halloween at all, that’s what!
Use chocolate frosting or brown/black candy melts in a piping bag to make the mouth and eyes.
Spiderweb Pancakes
Use black food coloring gel to create the black pancake. You could also make a chocolate pancake, for a pancake that is more brown than black.
Again, I used a powdered sugar glaze, but you could easily use melted white chocolate, white candy melts, or white frosting.
Use a piping bag to create the spider web design.
Ghost Pancakes
Place a few dollops of Cool Whip atop a giant stack of pancakes to create the ghosts body. Use a couple mini chocolate chips to create the mouth and eyes.
Cookie Cutter Pancakes
I first tried to make these cute halloween pancakes by placing the cookie cutter on the skillet, pouring the batter inside, flipping, then removing. However, I found that the pancake was difficult to remove from the cutter AND it was usually raw in the middle. If you try this method, make sure you pour thin pancakes.
What ended up working best, was making a regular size pancake then using the cookie cutter to cut out the shapes. I used these cookie cutters.
I think baking sheetpan pancakes would make this process easier.
