Birthday Traditions

Birthday’s were always special for my brother and I growing up.  My parent’s worked hard to make sure we had wonderful birthday traditions to hold onto.  It was the little things I remember most…

  • Being super excited to eat off of a decorative plate that was hanging on the wall.  It was something we only got to do on our birthday.
  • Eating leftover birthday cake for breakfast the next morning.
  • Balloons tied to the light hanging over the kitchen table.
I want my kids to look back and remember truly happy birthdays too!

Why Traditions Are Important

I love a good tradition.  The feeling of being part of something greater.  Traditions help me remember the wonderful times with my loved ones who are no longer here.  It’s a way to hold them close even though they can’t be physically close.  I am excited to experience all the things that filled me with joy with my own kids (and hopefully someday my grand kids).

I hear most people refer to traditions as lighthearted activities.  For example, putting the star on top of the Christmas tree, Sunday lunch at grandma’s house, or banging pots and pans at midnight on New Year’s Eve.  While those are wonderful traditions, and sure to bring about some happy memories, traditions are so much more than that.

"The Importance of Traditions"

I stumbled upon an article by Donna Rockwell, Psy. D titled “The Importance of Traditions.” It got me thinking about traditions on a much deeper level than before.  She described traditions as a way to “honor past generations by passing on their rites and rituals to the next generation.  In this way, our family lineages stay stable and strong.”

I never considered the way I watch White Christmas and decorate the Christmas tree each year as a way of keeping my family lineage stable and strong. I suppose it is. It is how my mom always decorated the Christmas tree when I was growing up.  I do it because she did/does it.  If my children grow up and do the same thing it will be because that’s how our family decorates the Christmas tree.

Donna goes on to say “That is how we realize our immortality – not in living forever, but in being part of living traditions.”  This reminds me of the quote by Banksy, “I mean, they say you die twice.  One time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit later on, when somebody says your name for the last time.”

Heavy, I know!  You can check out the full article by Donna here.

Now, let’s lighten this up a bit.  I wasn’t considering my family lineage when I started this particular birthday tradition.  I was simply looking for a way to get my young kids excited about birthdays (and cover up a baking disaster).

My Favorite Birthday Tradition

My favorite birthday tradition all started a few years ago when I invited my family over to celebrate my moms birthday.  I wanted to make a Ding Dong cake because my mom always gave us Ding Dong’s for breakfast when we were growing up.

I was excited to make this cake, but as it is with most new recipes, things didn’t go very smoothly.  I waited until the night before to start making the cake. I wanted everything to be fresh.  The cake portion of the Ding Dong cake turned out fine, but the cream center was a disaster.  Since I had waited until right before bedtime to get the different parts of the cake made (so that I could assemble once the kids were asleep) I couldn’t make another trip to the grocery store.

On to Plan B.  Wait, what is Plan B??

I looked through the cabinets and found a container of frosting, sprinkles, chocolate chips, and a little food coloring.  Aha! I’ll let Wyatt decorate the cake (Reese was too little to decorate at the time). Everyone will think it’s sweet and cute AND it will cover up all my mistakes.

And just like that, a new birthday tradition was born.  From that point on Wyatt & Reese have decorated every birthday cake.  It is something they look forward to every birthday.  I am so excited to see how this birthday tradition transforms as the kids get older.
