Family movie night is a regular occurrence at our house. It usually involves a fun snack, pajamas, snuggles, and staying up super late (& talking, but we are working on that one!). Lately, family movie night has been even more fun because we are beginning to incorporate non-animated movies into the mix. Recent favorites include all the Jumanji’s, Hook, and 3 Ninjas.
Since Halloween is one of our favorite holidays and family movie night is one of our favorite activities, I decided I needed to become an expert on kid-friendly Halloween movies. So, I did a little digging, a little investigating, and came up with a list of Halloween movies perfect for a family movie night!
Movie Night Snacks & Drinks
What’s a movie night without fun snacks and drinks? I’ll let you in on a little parenting secret…
…things don’t have to be over-the-top in order to be fun or exciting. When I say we have “fun snacks and drinks” I don’t mean that I made a hot fudge sundae with a gallon of soda on the side. Nope.
The only thing you have to do to make things fun for kids is to simply say it’s fun or special and then present it in a fun or special way. It really is that simple.
One time our special snack was pudding. Now, pudding is good and all, but it isn’t really anything to get excited about. I served it in some of our fancy glass dishes and let them eat it in front of the tv and they loved it! Another time I made a big snack board that looked awesome, but all it had on it were the regular snacks and fruit we always have on hand. They just loved that they had so many options all at once.
Now, don’t get me wrong, sometimes we do have over-the-top treats!! I’m just saying, don’t get stressed over “making it special” because really all that matters is that you are together having fun.
If you happen to be in a super festive mood, try one of these kid-friendly Halloween drinks or one of these Halloween treats! They are the perfect compliment to any of the kid-friendly Halloween movies listed below.
Kid-Friendly Halloween movies
The Addams Family (2019)
Follow along as Gomez and Morticia Addams navigate parenting teenagers in a modern world.
Parent Note: One of our family favorites, however, there is quite a bit of violence, but in a cartoon-playful way (if that even makes sense). My kids love this movie, especially the spider-bridge scene.
Rated: PG | Runtime: 1 h 26 m
Hotel Transylvania 1, 2, & 3 (2012) (2015) (2018)
Count Dracula is a loving, yet overprotective father to his daughter Mavis. You can’t go wrong with any of the Hotel Transylvania movies.
Rated: PG | Runtime: 1 h 31 m
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king of Halloween Town, stumbles upon Christmas Town and is fascinated by everything he sees. When he tries to bring Christmas to Halloween Town things seem to fall apart.
Rated: PG | Runtime: 1 h 16 m
Halloweentown (1998)
Marnie, a 13-year-old girl, and her siblings must help their good-witch grandmother save Halloweentown from dark and evil forces.
Parent Note: The only “scary” scene in this movie is the last 15 minutes. Maybe check it out before letting your kiddos watch. I don’t think it’s too bad (it only lasts a few minutes), but my son did say it scared him.
Rated: G | Runtime: 1 h 24 m
Coco (2017)
Miguel finds himself in the beautiful Land of the Dead intent on discovering what led to the generations-old ban on music.
Rated: PG | Runtime: 1 h 45 m

Victor accidentally marries a corpse. Watch as he tries to undo what he has done.
Rated: PG | Runtime: 1 h 17 m

Coraline finds herself trapped in a parallel universe.
Rated: PG | Runtime: 1 h 40 m
