How To Make A DIY Bubblegum Machine Costume

How To Make A DIY Bubblegum Machine Costume

Hi, friends!  It’s mid-August, so naturally, I’ve already started thinking about Halloween.   Last Halloween I really wanted to just make cute Halloween costumes.  Not necessarily for anyone to wear as their official Halloween costume, but more so just to have fun.  And fun was definitely had.  I got such a kick out of making them that I plan to do even more this year!

Ya’ll are going to think I’m crazy, but I really want to post a costume a day in October.  I know, I know, it sounds nuts – but it sounds fun too, right?!

Anyway, I was looking through my posts from 2022 and realized I never dedicated a post to one of my favorite DIY costumes from last year!  The bubblegum machine and Fred Flintstone were my 2 favorite costumes and its absolutely criminal that I don’t have a dedicated blog post for each of them.

In my defense, I did share the bubblegum machine costume on social media, just not the blog.  Not the same thing, but at least I shared it a little bit! I’m here to right that wrong.  Today I’m sharing all the details (that I can remember) of how to make a DIY Bubblegum Machine costume.

A few things to note before you get started…

  • Shop around at different craft stores (don’t forget Walmart!!).  Most craft stores offer coupons or change their sale items weekly, so check often to get the best price.
  • Use what you have first.  Our costume used a red dress with a white shirt over the top instead of a red skirt.  I would have preferred a red hat, but we had red hairbows here ready to go.
  • If you do have to buy something, try to choose something that you (or your child) will wear again.

SUPPLIES

  • White shirt
  • Red Skirt
  • Black Shoes
  • Cardboard (any cardboard – had any Amazon deliveries lately?)
  • Styrofoam half sphere (like this one)
  • PomPoms (like these)
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Elastic (I cut the elastic from an old pair of sweatpants)
  • Red Bow
  • Black Marker
  • Silver Paint

GET STARTED

This costume is actually pretty simple to pull together.  Other than the gumball part, there isn’t any “craftiness” involved.

  • Figure out the red and white part of the costume.   You want white on top and red on the bottom, like a classic bubblegum machine.  Check around your house and see what you already own first before going out and buying something new.  We had a plain red dress and a plain white T-shirt, so we made that work.  I rolled the sleeves up on the white T-shirt to make them shorter and a little more sporty.  I also tied it up in the back to make it a little more form-fitting.
  • Assemble the bubblegum.  Attach the elastic to the flat side of the styrofoam sphere.  I used elastic from an old pair of sweatpants.  You can use anything that will hold the sphere onto your (or your childs) body.  Then use hot glue to attach the pompoms to the round part of the sphere.  Cover the sphere completely.
  • Grab a pair of black shoes and a red bow and you are ready to go!
