Fall Family Activities: Fun At Home Edition

Fall Family Activities: Fun At Home Edition

Fall is my absolute favorite season.  Crisp air, beautiful scenery, hooded sweatshirts, apple cider, fall family activities…I LOVE IT!

It seems that fall 2020 is going to look a bit different than any fall in years past.  I guess there is still time for things to change, but I’m not holding my breath.  If the last half of 2020 is anything like the first half…well, maybe it’s best if we don’t even go down that road.

Being the optimistic person I am, I am confident fall will remain my favorite season.  There are still so many “fall” things to do and experience at home (or at a socially acceptable distance from others).

This year isn’t ideal, but it can still be fun. I made a list of fall family activities that can be enjoyed at home.  I’m trying to make the best out of a not-so-great situation and I want to encourage you to do the same.

In sharing my fall family activity list I hope it will give you a few ideas of things to do with your own family.  Again, just beause this year is different doesn’t mean it has to be boring.

Leaf Hunt

This activity by This Little Home of Mine is the perfect fall activity.  Simple concept.  Easy set-up.  Easy clean-up.  Gets kids moving.  What more can you ask for?

Make A Pumpkin Pie

What screams “fall” more than a pumpkin pie? (The answer is “nothing”) I really like the recipe on the back of the Libby Pumpkin Puree can.  Delish.

Make An Apple Crisp

My grandma had the best apple crisp recipe. Every single time I make it it’s amazing. I will be sharing this recipe and several others on an upcoming segment titled “A Little More Lively”

Pumpkin Crafts

Check out my recent post all about pumpkin crafts perfect for toddlers.  We will be doing all of these crafts this season!

Carve Pumpkins

My kids aren’t quite old enough to be trusted with a sharp knife, so we usually carve a family pumpkin.  We will most likely do that again this year.

Paint Pumpkins

Painting pumpkins is a little more age appropriate for my crew.

Stickers are also fun.  We bought these stickers last year.

Leaf Pile

I don’t think I need to explain this…but, rake a big pile of leaves and jump in it.  Actually, use a leaf blower to do the “raking” for you.  Much easier!

Halloween Movies

Fall is when early sunsets are welcome (it’s in January when we are craving daylight again).  Snuggle up and watch a (age appropriate) spooky movie.  Our favorite is The Nightmare Before Christmas =).

Check out this list of Family-Friendly Halloween Movies

Make Apple Cider

I have NEVER made apple cider before.  Seems so strange because it’s one of my favorite fall beverages.  I am going to give it a whirl this year. This recipe seems like a great one to start with.

Fall Picnic

Everyone thinks about a picnic on a summer day, but what about a picnic on a fall day?  Why not? The weather is usually gorgeous, fewer bugs, less heat…seems perfect!

Grateful List

Sit down as a family and write down what you are grateful for.  Write down EVERYTHING, no matter how silly or insignificant it seems.  Practicing gratitude is SO IMPORTANT for your mental health!

DIY Fall Decorations

Okay, the idea here is to find cute fall decor that my kids can help make and that I will want to display in our home year after year.

This Fall Leaf Wreath is so simple, yet aboslutely beautiful!

These Candy Corn Fall Decorations are adorable!

Make a garland with dreid oranges.  Learn how to dry oranges for decorating HERE

The thought of using toilet paper as a non-Halloween decoration makes me cringe, BUT these Toilet Paper Pumpkins are cute AND the kids coule help.

DIY Halloween Decorations

Decorating for Halloween is almost as big of a deal as decorating for Christmas at our house.  It seems like every year our collection grows and grows…

However, decorating can be expensive.  I still want to add to our collection this year, but I’m going to attempt to be a little more economical about it.  100 Dollar Store Halloween Decorations by Prudent Penny Pincher seems like a great place to start.

Fall Family Activities
for Fun (Not Quite) at Home

These next two items aren’t really things that can be done at home.  I had to put them on the list because they are two of my favorite fall family activities.

I am optimistically believing these places will figure out a way for customer’s to be socially distant.  I have no idea if this is possible, but I am keeping my fingers crossed (and my toes).

Pumpkin Patch

Hands-down my favorite fall activity.  I love everything about the pumpkin patch.  Hayrides, the apple cider, the animals, the games… EVERYTHING!

Apple Orchard

A less popular option than the pumpkin patch, but just as fun (and makes a beautiful backdrop for pictures!)

Stay Safe & Have FUn

I hope this list inspires you to get out there and have fun (and by “out there” I mean your backyard).
