I stumbled upon an article by Donna Rockwell, Psy. D titled “The Importance of Traditions.” It got me thinking about traditions on a much deeper level than before.  She described traditions as a way to “honor past generations by passing on their rites and rituals to the next generation.  In this way, our family lineages stay stable and strong.” 

I never considered the way I watch White Christmas and decorate the Christmas tree each year as a way of keeping my family lineage stable and strong. I suppose it is. It is how my mom always decorated the Christmas tree when I was growing up.  I do it because she did/does it.  If my children grow up and do the same thing it will be because that’s how our family decorates the Christmas tree.

Donna goes on to say “That is how we realize our immortality – not in living forever, but in being part of living traditions.”  This reminds me of the quote by Banksy, “I mean, they say you die twice.  One time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit later on, when somebody says your name for the last time.”

Now, let’s lighten this up a bit.  I wasn’t considering my family lineage when I started this particular birthday tradition.  I was simply looking for a way to get my young kids excited about birthdays (and cover up a baking disaster).
