8 Ways To Make Valentine’s Day Special For Kids

Hi, friends!! It’s finally February (January took FOREVER) and I’m ready to spread all the love all over the place! Also, we are one month closer to Spring and what’s not to love about that?

Okay, so the big draw for February is Valentine’s Day – the holiday of love! Most people think of Valentine’s Day as a romantic holiday.  It is, I suppose, but it isn’t only a romantic holiday.

For me, Valentine’s Day is about showing all the special people in your life that you love them.  Sounds nice, right?  So, today I am sharing how to make Valentine’s Day special for kids.  I have so many easy ideas that I’m sure you and your kids will love!

Make Valentine's Day Special

8 Ways To Make Valentine's Day Special For Kids

Hearts On Doors

I have seen this cute Valentine’s Day idea floating around the internet for years! You can start February 1st, 10 days before, or 5 days before – whatever amount of time before Valentine’s Day you choose, but each day you tape a heart onto your child’s door.  On each heart, you write something you love about your child.

You can cut your own hearts out of construction paper or buy pre-cut hearts to use.  I’ve seen them at Dollar Tree and at the Target Dollar Spot.

*Be careful when taping things to any painted surface as some tape can remove paint.  I like to use blue painter’s tape for things like this!*

Special Breakfast

Surprise your kiddos with a special breakfast on Valentine’s Day morning.  Honestly, you can take this idea in so many ways.

You can make actual Valentine’s heart-themed food, like heart-shaped waffles or heart-shaped cinnamon rolls.

You can make everything pink and red, like red velvet cinnamon rolls, red velvet pancakes, or, well anything red velvet!

Make Valentine's Day Special

Or, and probably the most fun and unique, you can create a fancy breakfast.  Think tablecloth, set the table, maybe even fresh flowers…

Don’t think you have to do anything over the top or homemade to make your breakfast special.  Anything you do that is different from the norm will be special.

Decorate Heart Cookies

Think Christmas cookie decorating, but for Valentine’s Day! Buy a package of sugar cookie dough (or make your own if you are really feelin’ it), grab a few heart-shaped cookie cutters, and get to baking!

For decorations, think icing (red, pink, and white), sprinkles, seasonal M&M’s, and whatever else tickles your fancy!

Give A Little Gift

Give your kids a little Valentine’s Day gift.  When I say “gift,” many people think of a birthday or a Christmas gift, but that’s not really the scale of gift I’m talking about.

When I think of a Valentine’s Day gift for a child I think of a smaller version of an Easter basket.  A book, a bit of candy, a few stickers, a bath bomb, you know, just a little something to make the day special.

Valentine Gift Ideas:

  • Candy
  • Stickers
  • Bath Bomb
  • Bubble Bath
  • Books
  • Coloring Book
  • Markers/Crayons/Pencils
  • Play-Doh
  • Slime
  • Slinky
  • Legos
  • Sock hat/Gloves
  • Jewelry

Special Valentine's Day Dinner

Just like with the special Valentine’s breakfast, a special Valentine’s dinner could make for a super sweet tradition!

Go fancy with linen tablecloths, taper candles, an elevated menu, you know, the whole bit! Maybe even have everyone dress up in their nicest outfit.

Or you could go more cutesy with a heart-shaped pizza and cupid floats!

Make Special Treats For Friends & Family

Make a special Valentine’s delivery to your friends, family, and neighbors.  There are so many cute Valentine-inspired treats out there.  It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate (but, by all means, if you feel the urge to go all out – go all out!).

Read Valentine's Day Books

Pick up a few Valentine-themed books for your bedtime stories.  A few book recommendations…

Decorate The House

I absolutely LOVE decorating the house for every holiday/season/celebration imaginable.  The biggest “decorating” holidays are Halloween and Christmas.  It’s those holidays that the whole entire house gets decked out.

The rest of the holidays aren’t quite as over-the-top but definitely still acknowledged.  For these holidays I usually decorate around the kitchen table the most, and then a bit in the living room.  Just enough to set the mood.

The best time to buy seasonal decor is after the holiday has passed.  So head to the store on February 15 to stock up on cute stuff for next Valentine’s day!

In the meantime, you can make your own decorations! Paper chains, make your own hearts to hang up, make your own banner out of construction paper, and/or a few balloons.
