In my 25 Fun Facts About Me post I joked that the only reason I even wanted to have kids was to plan their birthday parties (and get newborn photographs taken, of course). Obviously I was joking, but I really do love planning birthday parties, especially for kids. It probably sounds weird to all you normal people, but I love looking up birthday party/holiday decorations on Pinterest. It really gets my creative juices flowing. Now, I realize there are some people who either don’t enjoy the hunt for the perfect theme and some who just don’t have time for it. Either way, I have got you covered. I thought it would be fun to compile a list of adorable birthday party themes for kids…you know, to make myself feel like all of the hours of Pinterest browsing I have done weren’t in vain.
Things to Think About Before Picking A Birthday Party Theme for your Kids:
- What does my child like? Make a list of your child’s interests and hobbies. This will help you to pick a theme that matches your child’s personality.
- What is my budget? The cost of throwing a birthday party can get out of control quick if you aren’t careful. Establishing a budget first will ensure your cost doesn’t skyrocket, and it will also help you make decisions along the way.
- How much DIY do I want to do? I definitely have a Do-It-Yourself spirit, but I don’t always have the time or the desire to fire up my hot glue gun. This is one of those decisions that your budget may help answer.
- Who am I inviting? Some themes won’t make sense to an older crowd just the same as some themes won’t make sense to a younger crowd. You don’t want to spend time putting together a fabulous party that half of your guests don’t appreciate! Sounds petty, but I speak the truth.
- How many people am I inviting? Budget plays a big factor here too.
- Party location? If you plan on having it at your house you have to factor in the time it is going to take you to clean your house. (link cleaning article). Great options for parties are churches, does your church rent out a room for church members? We have a community gym that rents the basketball court for $20/hour. Check to see if you have anything like that in your area. Also check out trampoline parks, inflatable parks, bowling alleys, museums, nature centers, etc. Most have rooms available for rent, just keep in mind these will cost a little more, but then again
- Party time? The time of your party will determine what kind of food/snacks you should have. If you have the party during a meal time, your guests will expect a meal. Morning or mid afternoon parties, your guests will most likely only expect cake/ice cream and a few snacks. Time of day will also determine if your friends with young kids will be able to make it. If you schedule it during nap time or on a weeknight some people may not come. I’m not saying to schedule around your friends, just be aware that it is a possibility. No one wants to plan a party that no one can come too.
