Morning Routine of a Working Mom

Ever wonder what other households are doing in the morning?  Well, my friends, you are in luck! I thought it would be fun to give a play-by-play of a typical morning routine at my house.  I am going to go ahead and tell you, it isn’t pretty, buuuuuut we always get where we need to go (and on time!).

The Morning Routine of THIS Working Mom:

3:00 am

I wake up to Wyatt (age 4) crying because he is “frightened.” I lay in his bed with him trying to figure out when he started using the word “frightened” while I wait for him to fall back asleep.

4:00 am

I wake up in Wyatt’s bed to the sound of Reese (age 2) crying.  She had a potty accident in her bed. I help her get some dry pj’s on and decide I don’t feel like changing the sheets right now (I’ll throw them in the laundry in a few hours). I take her to sleep in my bed with me.

5:30 am

My alarm goes off.  I press snooze.

5:39 am

My alarm goes off again.  I press snooze again.

5:48 am

My alarm goes off again.  I press snooze yet again.

5:57 am

My alarm goes off one last time.  I finally decide to get up.  I let the dog outside, I turn on the coffee pot, and I realize that I pressed snooze too many times and now I don’t have time to take a shower (bless you, dry shampoo!).  I sit on the couch with my cup of coffee to enjoy Outdaughtered (or Quints By Surprise, or Sweet Home Sextuplets, or The Little Couple) for a few minutes before my day gets started.

6:20 am

I realize I watched TV for too long and now I have to rush to get ready.  I hurry to get my clothes on, apply my makeup, and do my hair (and by “do” I just mean throw it in a pony tail).

6:30 am

I start to wake the kids up.  I do so very calmly, sweetly, and ever so gently because the first few minutes of a child’s day are of the upmost importance, don’t ya know?! (or at least that is what I read in a Facebook article, insert eye roll).

I throw Reese’s sheets in the washing machine.

6:35 am

I go back in to wake up the kids.

I pick out their clothes for the day and set them on their dressers.

6:40 am

I tell the kids in a stern voice that if they don’t wake up right now they won’t have time to eat breakfast before we have to leave.

I go water the plants on the porch.

6:45 am

I ask the kids what they want for breakfast as they continue to lay in their beds.

6:50 am

The kids make their way into the kitchen, grab their tablets (don’t judge me), and sit at the table where their breakfast awaits ready for them to eat.

I go downstairs to feed the cats.

6:55 am

I remind the kids to keep eating because apparently they can’t eat and watch their tablets at the same time.

7:00 am

I tell the kids (loudly) that if they don’t finish their breakfast in 2 minutes they aren’t going to get to finish it.  Cue kids crying.

7:02 am

I turn into a raging lunatic and claim that there are NO MORE tablets or devices to be used at the kitchen table…EVER! The crying continues. We somehow manage to get dressed, brush our teeth, comb our hair, and find our shoes.

7:15 am

Somehow we make it to the car and get buckled in.

Repeat this Every. Single. Day.

*Disclaimer: Grant works 24-hour shifts for the fire department, so he isn’t home most mornings. However, on the mornings he is home he turns into a raging lunatic with me. What a team!

*Disclaimer: While we don’t usually have potty accidents at night (thank goodness), we ALWAYS have someone (oftentimes both) wake up throughout the night.

While everything in this post is 100% accurate and honest, it was meant to give you a little laugh.  I hope reading through our morning routine helped you to feel better about whatever chaos you may be experiencing each morning.  The point is, we do the best we can and that is all anyone can really ask!

Until next time,

Julie

**Update: I’ve recently implemented an amazing nighttime routine, which has completely transformed my mornings.  Check it out here

But, your awesome parents. So don’t ever get discouraged.

Thank you! Oh, I’m not discouraged (at least not yet!)! I just find it funny that we are such a mess most of the time!
