Hi and welcome back! Today I want to talk about a fun, hands-on learning activity our family recently completed. A butterfly garden for kids! It was so neat! We were able to watch and learn about the butterfly lifecycle.
The butterfly garden for kids was such a cool experience for us, I couldn’t not tell you about it! 10/10 recommend.

How Do Butterfly Gardens Work?
Growing butterflies at home is easier (and more fun) than you might think. Get the butterfly party started by ordering a butterfly growing kit. We chose this butterfly kit on Amazon.
The butterfly kit arrived with a mesh butterfly enclosure, an instructional booklet (with a ton of great information and butterfly-related activities), a feeding dropper, a chrysalis holding log, and a voucher for 5 free caterpillars. The caterpillars are free, but the shipping is $7.95.
The butterfly voucher was simple to redeem. The website is listed on the voucher, along with the redemption code. Within 3 days we received caterpillars in the mail.
For a few days, we watched the caterpillars move around the caterpillar enclosure. Once they formed their chrysalises, we carefully moved them to the butterfly enclosure. The action was pretty non-existent for the next 5-7 days, but it was still fun to check and see if they had emerged.
It was interesting to me how noisy a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis actually is. I could hear the rustling from the other room. Over the course of 2 days, all the butterflies had emerged. We fed them and watched them flutter around a few days before letting them free outside.
Is There Any Hidden Expense?
Yes and no. Insect Lore and Amazon are very clear that the caterpillars are free, but that shipping fees may apply. It’s not that they may apply, they do apply. Another expense, a very minimal expense, but an expense nonetheless is feeding the butterflies. The informational booklet explains that you can feed the butterflies fresh fruit or put sugar water on a cotton ball. The longer you keep the butterflies in the enclosure after they emerge, the more you will have to feed them.
Importance of Butterflies
Why should we care about butterflies? I mean sure, they are beautiful and graceful, but what else are they good for?
In short, a lot! Butterflies are one of our much-needed pollinators. Without pollinators, the human race could not, and would not survive.
They also hold education. scientific, health, and ecosystem value. Read more here.
