Hey there! If you have been here awhile you know I love celebrating birthdays. You can read more about that here, here, and here. This past December my son, Wyatt, turned 6 years old. However, keeping par with the rest of 2020, things didn’t go as usual.
Since we were in Hawaii for Wyatt’s birthday (I’ll expand on that in an upcoming post) we couldn’t do the usual big birthday bash. Also, let’s not forget about COVID…(sigh).
Anyway, even though we couldn’t do birthday things the usual way, we still wanted to make it a super special day for him. Since Wyatt is obsessed with Minecraft I immediately thought “minecraft birthday!”
I scoured the internet for inspiration and came up with a few Minecraft birthday ideas that were SUPER ADORABLE (if I do say so myself) and Wyatt LOVED them.
What Is Minecraft?
Don’t be embarrassed. I didn’t know what Minecraft was either. The only thing I knew was that it was a video game. That’s all anyone really needs to know anyway, right?
Wrong! At least wrong in the eyes of a 5 almost 6-year-old boy. In Minecraft, you have the ability to create just about anything your imagination can come up with. There is a lot of building and exploring, a little bit of surviving. You can read more about Minecraft here.

Minecraft Birthday Cake
There are so many cute ideas out there for Minecraft-inspired birthday cakes. What I was looking for was a cake that required minimal supplies. Since we weren’t at home (remember – Hawaii) I didn’t have any of my baking supplies and I didn’t want to spend money on buying a bunch of stuff just for one cake.
One of my favorite birthday cake “hacks” is to buy a plain sheet cake from the bakery and decorate it myself. This eliminates the actual baking of the cake and also eliminates the potential for any baking disasters.
I ordered a small chocolate cake with bright green icing from the grocery store. When I picked up the cake I also picked up a tube of black decorative frosting (like this). I used black frosting to draw a creeper faced onto the cake. I think it turned out super cute, and Wyatt did too!
Minecraft Torch
Torches are a big part of Minecraft…I mean, how else are you supposed to see when you tunnel into a mountain?
I did not get a good picture of the torches Grant made, but they were so cute. He used a couple of flashlights, 2 paper towel tubes, LOTS of hot glue, and a bit of construction paper to accomplish his vision.
Thesefrom Handmade With Ashley aren’t what Grant made, but they are awesome and perfect for inspiration!
Minecraft Decorations
I created a Minecraft world in our kitchen with only a few basic supplies: crepe paper, balloons, construction paper, and plastic tablecloths. It turned out SO CUTE!
Minecraft Gift Wrap
There was not a bit of Minecraft wrapping paper to be found on the island, so this is what I came up with. Not the most extravagant or creative, but matches the theme and holds presents (and that’s all Wyatt cared about anyway!). Plain, solid-colored gift bags with construction paper designs taped to the front.
We Invited Elfie Too
Seeing as how Wyatt has a December birthday, it would have been rude of us not to extend an invitation to our Elf on the Shelf. Thankfully, Elfie is a good sport!
