My son Wyatt turned 7 in December. I’m not sure exactly how it happened, but somehow it did. When my husband suggested he have a Nerf War Birthday Party I thought he was a little crazy. I mean, it sounded so much easier to have his party at a place like Sky Zone or the Inflatable Fun Factory.
Now that it is all said and done I am SO GLAD we went with the Nerf War theme. Wyatt claimed it was “the best birthday ever!” Everyone had a great time, although I’m not sure who had more fun, the adults or the kids!
Today I’m here to share all the details from his special day!
Now, I love themes – especially birthday party themes! I think it is so much fun to scroll through Pinterest for hours getting cute ideas for decorations, snacks, and creative themes. I have stumbled across some really fun themes throughout the years (my favorite birthday party themes). It is amazing how creative some people are!
Be sure to check out the posts I’ve written on party planning (hereand here).
Nerf War Battle Arena
The first thing you need for a Nerf War Birthday Party is a battle arena. We were fortunate to have this big open space because we are currently renovating a building (more to come on that). However, you don’t need to have a huge space to have an awesome Nerf battle. A basement, a backyard, even your living room could work. The only thing I would advise is to remove anything that might get broken or fall. Even the most timid of Nerf warriors can accidentally break something.
The next thing you need are different places to hide or camp (not really hip to the lingo, but you know what I mean). Since we were using a big open space with nothing in it, we needed to create places to duck behind, sneak through, etc. However, if you are creating a battle arena in a furnished room you could rearrange the furniture, throw some blankets over a few chairs, bada bing bada boom you got yourself a battle arena!!
We went with large cardboard boxes to create our stations. My husband figured out this genius way of attaching them. He used a screwdriver to create a hole in the cardboard then threaded a ziptie through the hole to attach. This zip tie method worked great! Everything was incredibly sturdy.
Next you are going to need plenty of Nerf guns. We included a little blurb on the birthday invitation to “BYONG” – “Bring Your Own Nerf Gun” but we also wanted to be sure to have plenty in case someone didn’t have a gun to bring.
We had a lot of guns, to begin with, but Grant had a great idea to look on Facebook Marketplace and found someone practically giving away an entire box of Nerf guns. We quickly called dibs on those and that was that.
For ammo, I found a pretty good deal on Amazon for bulk bullets (here).

Nerf Cake
When it comes to birthday cakes my first thought is “how can I turn a store-bought cake into something special”. I learned long ago that store-bought cakes save so much stress and so much time and making them look cute is usually super simple.
I wanted a Nerf-themed cake to match our Nerf War Birthday theme, so I hopped on Amazon and found a package of cupcake toppers (not exact, but similar here). I went with cupcakes and a sheet cake because…I have no self-control.
Nerf Decorations
As far as party decorations go, ours were pretty traditional. A few streamers, tablecloths, and lots of balloons. I sprinkled Nerf darts down the center of each table as a table runner of sorts.
There are so many really cool DIY Nerf War Birthday Party Decorations. I love a good DIY, but this year I didn’t have the time (or energy, if I’m being honest).

A few decor ideas that I saw and really loved were:

You might be wondering what we did with all the Nerf guns…
Well, as I said, we had quite a few Nerf guns prior to this party. Earlier this year I was fed up with trying to stuff the guns in closets and toy boxes…it drove me nuts. So, in an effort to create a useful, yet decorative, storage solution I installed this DIY Nerf Gun Storage Wall in Wyatt’s room. It was pretty simple to put together and 100% worth it. I love it!
where did you the nerf for the side of the cake
